Abraham Caressing Isaac (B.33)

Abraham Caressing Isaac

  • Etching on fibrous laid paper, with clean, large margins. Signed in the plate, Rembrandt f., lower left. Cluster of Grapes with Stem Watermark (Ash and Fletcher, chap. 21, Variant B.c., pg. 123).
  • Biorklund Barnard's second state of two, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's third state of five with the foliage above and to the right of Abraham's head extremely faint.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, a late third state impression as issued by H.L. Basan (1807) showing wear between Abraham's feet and the slipt stroke running upwards from the apple, but before the plate was rebitten in the fourth state impression by Jean.
  • According to Schwartz, the plate is titled "Jacob caressing Benjamin". He states that the traditional title, "Abraham Caressing Isaac", was recently rejected. Neither theme is taken directly from the Bible.
