The Agony in the Garden (Christ on the Mount of Olives) (B.75)

The Agony in the Garden

  • Etching and drypoint on thick wove paper, trimmed to the platemark. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 165 (with the last digit missing), lower right.
  • Biorklund Barnard's first and only state, Nowell Eusticke's second state of two, showing the horizontal shading below the knee and diagonal crosshatching between the angel's leg and gown.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, a second state impression as issued by Creery (1816) in his "Collection of 200 Etchings", showing the background rebitten and skillfully retouched.
  • According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Luke 22: 39-46.
