The Angel Appearing to Shepherds

  • Etching on cream wove paper. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1634, lower right.
  • Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three, Nowell Eusticke's first state of five with the tree trunk being shaded with light diagonals, and shading added to the second man from the left and ground around him, the two distant cows on the right, and to the wings of the angel.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, an intermediate first state impression with small wear in the landscape.
  • A rare seventeenth century impression.
  • Nowell Eusticke comments that, "fine clear impressions are rare."
  • According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Luke 2:8-14.
