The Baptism of the Eunuch (B.98)

The Baptism of the Eunuch

  • Etching on wove paper, trimmed to the platemark. Mounted to thick wove stock. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1641, lower right. 
  • Biorklund Barnard's second state of two, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's third state of four after the cascade at the right is shaded, and the sulphur tinting in the sky shows some wear.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, a third state impression as issued by P.F. Basan (1785-1797), after the appearance of the left to right diagonal scratch about 1/2 inch to the right of the standing man.
  • According to Schwartz, this is a depiction from the New Testament, Acts 89:26-39.
