The Death of the Virgin (B.99)

The Death of the Virgin

  • Etching and drypoint on laid paper, trimmed to the borderline. Signed in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1639, lower left.
  • Biorklund Barnard's fourth state of four, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's fourth state of five, after the fine vertical shading is added to the foremost bedpost and much roulette work to strengthen the shadows.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, an intermediate fourth state impression as issued by P.F. Basan (1785-1797) with the back of the reader at left center still strong, but before the regular horizontal and left to right diagonal shading is added to the top of the table in the fifth state.
  • According to Schwartz, this is an apocryphal theme with a long iconographic tradition dating back to Albrecht Durer and his cycle on perspective, The Life of a Virgin.
