Raising of Lazarus Small Plate

  • Etching on cream laid paper with clean, large margins. Fragment of undistinguished shield watermark. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f 1642, (the 2 in reverse) lower left corner.
  • Biorklund Barnard's first state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's first state of three, with the three fine lines in the back of Lazarus's head still visible and left to right diagonal shading in front of the kneeling woman's breast very clear.
  • A late first state which Nowell Eusticke refers to as ''clear''.
  • A seventeenth century impression.
  • According to Schwartz, this is a depiction from the New Testament, John 11:1-44.
