Negress Lying Down

  • Etching, drypoint and burin on thin laid paper with small margins. Signed and date, Rembrandt f. 1658, lower left. Collector's stamp of Felix Hupka (not in Lugt), red ink, verso.
  • Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's third state of five after the blank spaces at the top of the plate are shaded.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, a late third state impression as issued by H. L. Basan (1807), showing the characteristic wear above the body and on the body itself.
  • According to Schwartz, Bartsch's identification of the figure as a negress rests on no certain grounds and that in the first state, at least, she looks caucasian.
