St. Jermone Kneeling in Prayer

  • Etching on thick, cream laid paper with wide margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1635 (with the 'd' in reverse and the '5' barely legible), upper right.
  • Biorklund Barnard's first and only state, and Nowell Eusticke's second state of three showing the strong short right to left diagonal scratch under the 'ndt' of the signature.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, an early second state impression as issued by P.F. Basan (1785-1797) after the plate was cleaned along the left edge.
  • Nowell Eusticke refers to this impression as "quite good".
  • Rembrandt revisited the theme of St. Jerome, one of the four Latin Doctors of the Church, seven times in his oeuvre.
