The Stoning of St. Stephen

  • Etching on thick laid paper with clean, small margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1635, lower left.
  • Biorklund Barnard's second state of two, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's second state of four after the addition of the fine close diagonal right to left shading to the top of the head of the man at the extreme left.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, a second state impression as issued after the Watelet retouch (c.1760) with the dark shadows skillfully reworked with fine close parallel lines making the dark places practically solid.
