Three Heads of Women, One Asleep (B.368)

Three Heads of Women

  • Etching on thin laid paper with threadbare margins.  Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1637.
  • Biorklund Barnard's first and only state, and Nowell Eusticke's second state of three showing the first "R" of the signature rebitten and close shading added to the hat of the woman, upper right, and shading below the nostrils of the lower woman.
  • According to Nowell Eusticke, an intermediate second state impression as issued by H.L. Basan (1807) with the impression light, and the long horizontal line from the first state (1/2" from the bottom) now completely worn away.
