The Virgin and Child with the Cat and Snake (B.63)

The Virgin and Child with Cat and Snake

  • Etching with burin on laid paper. Signed and dated in the plate lower center.
  • From the second state of four according to Nowell Eusticke. From the Jean receuil as issued in 1810, before the rebiting of the plate that appears with the later Bernard and Beaumont receuils.
  • This work does not depict a specific passage in the Bible, but rather employs symbolism through the introduction of the snake under the Virgin's foot, and Joseph removed from the scene, viewing through the window.
